|
|
We live in Boise, ID, and want to go boating on Great Slave Lake, NWT, in late Summer. Wife was told that you could see the Northern Lights in September. Is September to late in the year to go boating there, because winter is coming on? The islands in the eastern part of the lake would be our destination. Would it be better to launch at Fort Resolution, Yellowknife, or any place else? We have a 23' Northwest jet boat, 212 pump, with 3/4 hardtop to keep us out of the weather and we would camp on our boat. Fuel capacity of boat is 136 gallons and I could carry more. The islands look quite barren and is there a problem with submerged rocks to look out for? Thanks for any info. - Jens |

You should drop me an email so I can send you maps of that area.
Are there rocks submerged....lots.
Unless you really want to launch from Fort Res I would almost come up to Yellowknife and go from there. There are channel markers out to the east arm of the lake.
September can get pretty rough on the lake..fall winds start to blow but you should be good. Bring extra food in case you have to camp for additional days due to weather. Fishing is good anywhere. _________________ If you ain't hittin bottom you ain't jetboatin! |

After you mentioned Sept. was a possible bad weather time on the lake we decided to go to Lake Powell. Long story short, a head cold and 10,000' elevation cut our trip short and returned home. Wife and I still plan a visit to Great Slave Lake in the future. I didn't realize the buoy system for navigation. Any other navigation aids would be appreciated!!! |

I sure don't want to throw any negatives out there, but I have a question that maybe someone can answer and maybe save someone some trouble? What happens if an out of province (Alberta), or country, boater comes along and is checked by our" saviors of the waterways" and asks for their boat operators licence? Do you have to have a licence south of the 49th? |

In the state of Idaho no special boat operators license is required. If you take a boaters safety class, you usually get a reduction in your insurance cost. Boat needs an invasive species sticker to help pay to fight critters attaching to boat and being moved to other bodies of water. |
