Rick, you have some good points but by allowing piston changes and other things to the cx class we are doing two things mainly.
1. driving the cost of the engine up considerably. It is a pretty penny to have an engine biulder change out pistons, studs valve springs. There are alot of guys that would have to pay to get this done.
2. Making it way easier and alot more probable that cheating will happen. If someone is in there doing things using non GM parts, you can bet your bottom dollar that they will be looking for anything they can do to help improve reliabilty or performance that may be in a grey area. Even right now I am sure some things are being done. I am not saying they are illegal but are in a grey area. Some of these enegine shops are very smart at exploiting those areas and all it takes is money.
We are working on a piston change for the LSX class but only because the pistons will not stand up. No other changes are proposed. There will a be a part number from 1 manufactureer that you can get and that will be accepted. No other work will be allowed. We either have to do that or only have A spec and they pretty much all have had issues last season but the costs are double of the LSX. _________________ Mark

Mark maybe you haven’t seen it yet but we have a piston/ connecting rod problem in the CT525, much the same as the LSX. Big difference with the CT motor is that the whole thing needs to be changed when there is a problem. Not just the pistons.
The first 3-5 years the motor seamed good only 1-2 failures each year. I do agree there are more boats now but we are seen 10-15 failures last year. All with broken pistons, most with a rod broken also, all of them not repairable. $8100 plus labor ECT, gone each time.
I was only involved in a few of the blow ups, and they were not aggressive tunes. 1 with avgas and 26 deg timing broke with 3-4 hours of brake in on it and 1 hour of race. 2 with C-12 fuel and 26 deg timing, plugs and pistons black with over fueling. It is not always a bad set-up or aggressive tune.
If we can come to an agreement of a ”SPEC” piston, rod, and valve spring combo, I’m sure we can make this more affordable and better racing. And get more boats starting and finishing races. We can’t say that this opens thing up for cheating, sounds like everyone thinks the cheating is here now.
Of course this means more and better “Teching” of the class. We have been week on this in the past and need to step that up in the future.
