Some thoughts.....when "testing" and getting to know the boat, wear all appropriate safety gear. Helmet, racing life jacket, strap in, possibly even fire retardant clothing. You need to get the feel of what it is like with all the gear and you need the protection of all the gear. Wear shoes that can be easily kicked / peeled off if you end up in the water. Trying to swim with shoes on is HARD. No "kick" to help with propulsion. Put two of you in the boat. They handle differently with two than they do with one. If at all possible your second should be your future naviguesser. He/she needs to become comfortable with what is happening and you need all the eyes and brains in the boat you can get. At race speed you are covering OVER 7 boat lengths a SECOND in an "A" boat. In just over 2 seconds you have covered the length of an American football field. Sh#@ happens fast.
You will have setbacks. You will make mistakes. You will hit things. Prepare now mentally and dollar wise so they (the incidents) are not too devastating. _________________ "faster, Faster, FASTER until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of DEATH"#163 "Tuff-n'-Nuff" |

I was at Emery's place last Friday. He's been having some trouble with his shoulder and just recently put his back out so he hasn't been doing much boating. Said he's only had the boat out once this summer. Other than that he's doing pretty good. He also mentioned that his computer crashed a while back and hasn't got it fixed yet so that would explain why he hasn't been on the forum lately.
He's trying to get up to Whitecourt to watch the races on August 23rd & 24th. |
