Make sure if you purchase a new boat this spring it has a transport canada plate on it. Boats built by small manufacturers that are not compliant are sometimes non insurable. Some insuance companies will not insure a non compliant vehichle. Financing is also difficult Unless you have a huge unsecured line of credit Most finance companies will deny financing. Just do your homework before making a huge purchase.

Compliance Notices Safety Compliance Notice Requirements
Every pleasure craft manufactured or imported in Canada shall display a Canadian compliance notice (capacity or conformity label) before it is sold to an end user.

In view of the coming into force of the new Small Vessel Regulations scheduled for 2009, a new process will be put in place for Safety Compliance Notices. Major changes to the process are:

•A new form of Declaration of Conformity (DOC) to the construction requirements will have to be prepared by the manufacturer, builder or importer of small vessels and submitted to the Minister.
•After having submitted the Declaration of Conformity the manufacturers, builders or importers will be able to issue their own compliance notices in the form prescribed by the Minister.
•One year after the coming into force of the new Small Vessel Regulations the Compliance Notices program will be extended to non-pleasure craft.

As far as I know you can still get insurance on a boat without a transport canada compliance lable on it. All a person needs to get is a marine survey done on the vessel to get insurance or financing.
