What type of oil should I be using in Alberta in a MP 5.7 EFI? I brought this boat up from the states and the guy has it running on SAE40. Also do you have to continually add oil to an engine in a jet boat for some reason?

I run 10/30 in my 5.7 but never have to add any oil to my boat between oil changes may be time for a rebuild. How many hrs on your engine. Question

It only has 100 hours on it. I read it on another post on here or meanchicken about having to add oil due to the temp they run at.

Mine will burn 1/2 litre or less between changes......lots of revs for a long period of time you should expect some oil consumption.

You should be running a multigrade;Mercruiser suggests 25w40 but I have always run a full synthetic Mobil 1in 15/40 or 15/50.

Even the best quality oil is cheap compared to an engine rebuild;we also boat in a wide range of temperatures in Alberta.

I run HDX 0-30 , change the oil every fall so the engine doesent sit all winter with old oil. I never have to add oil over the summer. Going on 350 hrs so far.

I began with a carbed 5.7 Marinepower. Two replacements later, they all have used oil. Running a high performance engine at high rpms while it is bouncing over waves, pulling G's turning, etc. causes oil to fly all around the crankcase leading to oil consumption, whether through the rings, valve guides or sucked through the PCV. Mine uses 1/2 quart every tank (34 gallons) running Mobil1 10/30 in the cold months and 20/50 in the summer.

Joe Gibbs Racing 15W-50 Hot Rod Synthetic. It has high zinc content (ZDPP), not found in big name oils anymore. No dry starts in the spring. Plus it has rust inhibitors added. Big bonus considering we run our engines in boats and they are stored all winter. Good stuff...
