Looking for an opinion on Engines for a 20' approx 2800lb 12deg River Boat. I'm pretty sure I'm going to put a 212 Hamilton Pump in it. What would have the best "Bang for the Buck" as far as Top end speed, General Fuel Economy and Reliability. It'll be in a boat built much like a E6 Sabre. I am considering a 6.0HO 380hp, 8.1HO 425hp and maybe a ZZ502 or ZZ383.

Does anyone has any experience or opinions on what is the best all around engine for the price!!

for good power to weight on the 212 with 2.4kw turbo impellor I would go for the 6.0 or zz383, you should spin it better than 4600rpm.

Does anyone know what the 8.1L HO is like for power? Would you gain much for top end from going from a 6.0 to 8.1 HO with the Hamilton Pump?. It should have quite a bit more bottom end I think, but I would imagine it's quite a bit heavier too. Would it burn a lot more fuel than a 6.0 or be fairly comparable?

I nicely build 383 from a reputable builder would be the way I'd do it. Build for a good torque band around 3200 / 4000 rpm and you'll like it. Those 6. liters are screamers in the trucks they are put in (if I'm thinking about the same engine) and they get crappy fuel economy.

i have also owned a 383ci driving 212, i agree this is a very good combo.. the 383ci with some good hp (say 360odd) really does make the 212 sing..

Thanks Guy's

Would anyone think that the 425 hp 8.1 be much of a step up from the 383, they are close to the same price but the 8.1HO is 50+ more hp and more Torque also, but I would think it's also a lot heavier too. Plus Marine power offers full warranty if you just buy it from them..simply drop it in?. You would think this new technology (Vortec and MPFI )would have some kind of benefit as far as economy and performance.

UNsure?

Dale
