I have an SD-309 pump with only 20 hours on it since a complete rebuild. Also coupled to a new u-joint. The other day I cruised up the Clearwater, did some fishing, and when I was going to head home I had no thrust from the pump. The first time I tried to accelerate I just heard a squealing and grinding. When boat is idling it sounds fine and looking through the inspection hole I can see the pump shaft is turning, but there is no propulsion or wake. I didn't suck anything up through the grate, and there was no indication anything had gone wrong. Is it possible the impeller can slip on the shaft? Can anyone provide some insight? Thanks!

Maybe the key way popped out of the groove?

Yeah maybe you're right. Is part of the key visible or is it hidden under the impeller?

I am wanting to do that, just unsure about the bearings and seals in the bowl. If I unbolt the bowl will it slide right off and allow me to work on the impeller?

Undo the steering and reverse and remove all the bowl bolts. (Usually 3/4" wrench)There is nothing that will surprise you when taking it apart. Slide the bowl off and then try to spin the imp by hand. If it moves your key way is probably gone. You will need a large socket or wrench to remove the imp if you wanna check out both sides. It's a very easy job.....also check the end of the shaft for wear. Sometimes it will groove or oblong in the end bushing, this bushing is pressed in there and will not come out unless pounded out.

I took the bowl off, which was simple like you said. The impeller is still intact with the shaft, but I can turn the impeller by hand and the u-joint is not moving which tells me the sPlines are gone. I guess I have to drag it back to Gibbons and hope try can fix it AGAIN and hopefully with something that lasts more than 20 hours. I need a bulletproof u-joint that works for a SBF 302

I Spoke to the service department in gibbons who rebuilt my pump in the fall and installed a new u-joint who claims there is only one option for u-joints and the one they used is good for 1000+hp race boats( which I am having trouble believing). If that were true why would it be stripped already? Especially after only 20 hours use and nothing has jammed in the impeller, it looks like it just came out of the box. Does anyone have an opinion on this? I think they are going to charge me for new parts and installation which doesn't seem right to me....

My question, after reading this is: How deep is the shaft going into the U-Joint?

Probably the U-Joint is not long enough, and the spline contact is too short. That might cause the spline damage.

Other than that, a busted spline is simply bad parts (i.e. lousy shaft or U-Joint)

In my boat, the shaft goes nearly 2" into the U-Joint.
