Trip on the Peace River.........
Last week I had the pleasure of a trip on the Peace River with myself and four of my friends. It was a beautiful warm summer day, and we took off from the Shaftsberry river crossing. We went up stream quite a way, and as the day wore on we checked out a whole bunch of things. Being quite late in the year, the river was quite low, although for the most part, the depth meter showed between 6 and 12 feet. However, there were a lot of gravel bars to be seen which are usually submerged. It started to get late, and we began our journey home. On the way home, a couple of the guys wanted to try some knee boarding. We must have spent a couple of hours doing this, and before we knew it, it started to become dark. Very quickly it turned from evening to night, and everything became pitch black. This made navigation very hazardous. We got to well within sight of the ferry when suddenly a gravel bar appeared in front of us, and then another and another, and another. The skipper tried to run over them as there was no chance of avoiding or turning around. He pinned the throttle and we scraped bottom. It appeared almost as though we might just make it to deeper water when we went hard aground. We ground to a halt, and a quick survey showed us to be high and dry in about 1 inch of water. Another 100 feet or so, and we would have made it. Well, we all got out (at this time it was about 9:00 p.m.) We tried pushing and prying, but there was no chance, we were stuck. We gave up about midnight or so, resigned that we were going to be spending the night. It was not the most comfortable night I have ever spent, it was kind of cold and we couldn't run the engine to provide any heat. We did not have any blankets, and a couple of the guys were still wet. Even though the boat was equipped with lights, I have to say I find them useless in the dark. Morning did come, and I recollect it was about 7;00 when I woke up. We looked around, and luckily the river had risen by about 6" overnight. We had to work for about an hour to free ourselves, and we managed to get the boat back onto the trailer by 9:00 or so. I have river boated on the Peace for about 25 years, but this the first time I ever became shipwrecked and had to spend the night. Never the less, it was an adventure to be remembered by all. Subsequent inspection revealed that there was no damage done to the boat or the pump. I will try to attach some photos when I can figure out how to get the pictures out of the telephone. Cheers

Sorry about your night on the river. It can happen pretty easily.

NOW!!! as for the guys knee boarding on the river. Someone has rocks in there heads. Were these guys wearing full motocross gear and well vented helmets. Obviously they do not respect the river enough to think about what can happen very quickly. I had a good friend of mine pull that trick 20yrs ago and it was the last time he did anything. He pretty much died in his brothers arms on the beach after he missjudged where he was at and hit a gravvel bar and crashed in the rocks. He was brain dead in a couple of days from the brain swelling. My daughter is good friends with his daughter who he never met as his wife was pregnant when it happened.

SO GET A CLUE. IT'S NOT A LAKE IT'S A FRIGGEN RIVER!!!
