Roseburg is now a memory and the mental preparation starts for the Idaho water. The following info may be of some interest.

Some background---the race in 2006 was held on 20-23k worth of flow. The race in 2005 was held on 6500-7200.

The following info is the historic flow for the Salmon on April 20-23 from 1990 until 2006. The flows are in cubic feet per second. (A cubic foot of water contains about 8 gallons and weighs about 62+ pounds.)

YEAR flow Apr 20 flow Apr 23
1990-- 18600 -- 24000
1991-- 5600 -- 6600
1992 -- 12700 -- 12700
1993 -- 8000 -- 8300
1994 -- 15400 -- 23300
1995 -- 9000 -- 8000
1996 -- 18100 -- 15900
1997 -- 25000 -- 34000 Shocked
1998-- 7100 -- 11600
1999-- 19900 -- 18200
2000 -- 18100 -- 23300
2001-- 6400 -- 6300
2002 -- 12400 -- 10900
2003 -- 10600-- 14200
2004 -- 10400 -- 9200
2005-- 8300 -- 8200
2006-- 14100-- 18100
(the water dropped after we ran last year. We ran on April 15-16-the above are for dates April 20-23-closer to the dates we will run THIS year)

Some observations......it changes DAILY this time of year. The level on Friday can be VERY different from what Sunday brings-UP or DOWN but mostly it is a rising trend. For every 1000cfs of flow the river rises approximately 6 inches. The Salmon has NO dams anywhere-it is not controlled. Flow is totally dependent on snow melt and/or rain throughout a VAST area. At maximum spring runoff flows it usually attains 100,000-130,000cfs flows. As flows come up there can be debris in the water. The ideal flows to race on are 8-13000 cfs (IMO). No matter what the flow levels there are green rollers. Some are LARGE green rollers. The river will task you. Adrenalin flows easily.

The whole race course is viewable from paved roads.
