Jet Pump Maintenance

Whether you’re an avid or occasional boater, keeping your boat’s jet pump in top condition is key to maintaining both performance and safety. Without a well-maintained jet pump, your boating experience could be compromised.

Why Regular Maintenance Matters

A jet pump is one of the most vital components in your boat’s propulsion system. If neglected, problems like poor performance, reduced speed, or even complete pump failure could occur. Regular maintenance not only extends the life of the pump but also ensures your boat runs safely, smoothly, efficiently and avoids costly repairs.

Key Steps for Jet Pump Maintenance

  1. Check and Replace the Impeller

The impeller and wear ring are a critical part of the jet pump. Over time, impellers can wear down, get damaged, or become clogged with debris. Regular inspection for signs of wear and tear is important.

  • How to inspect: Check the impeller for any signs of cracks, chips, or bends. A damaged impeller should be replaced or repaired immediately to avoid further damage to the jet pump. Check the wear ring for gouges, imperfections and clearance to the impeller.
  1. Inspect and Clean the Intake Grate

The intake grate is responsible for keeping debris and larger objects from entering the jet pump. Regularly inspecting and cleaning the intake grate will ensure it remains in good working order.

  • How to inspect: Check the intake for any accumulation of weeds, algae, or other debris that could restrict water flow. Ensure there are no cracks in the grate, the bars are not bent, and all hardware is tight.
  1. Flush the System After Salt Water Use

Saltwater and other corrosive elements can cause damage to internal components, including the impeller, housing, and bearings.

  • How to flush: If possible after a salt water run, put into fresh water and run the engine for a few minutes to ensure all salt, dirt, and debris are flushed out of the system.
  1. Grease the Bearings

Jet pump bearings allow for smooth rotation, which is essential for proper performance. Over time, bearings can wear out or lose lubrication, leading to poor performance and even damage.

  • How to lubricate: Use high-quality marine grease to lubricate the bearings as part of regular maintenance. Ensure the correct amount of lubricant is applied, as both over-greasing and under-greasing can lead to issues.
  • When to grease bearings: Bearings should be greased every 10 to 20 hours or more frequently if you use your boat in harsher conditions. If you have used your boat recently, feel the pump housing. If it is noticeably warmer, there are possible issues with the seal. We recommend contacting your service provider immediately.
  1. Inspect the Pump Housing

The pump housing is where the impeller is located, and it needs to be in good shape for the jet pump to function properly.

  • How to inspect: Look for any cracks, corrosion, or signs of damage to the housing. If you notice any issues, the housing may need to be repaired or replaced.
  1. Monitor for Vibration or Noise

If you hear unusual noises or notice vibrations while operating the boat, it could be a sign of an issue with the jet pump. Listen for grinding, whirring, or strange sounds, as these could indicate that the impeller or bearings need attention.

  • American Turbine: Check weep hole for water leaking
  • What to do: If you notice any unusual noises, stop the boat immediately and inspect the pump for any potential issues, such as debris, worn parts, or damage. If there are no visible signs, but it continues, contact your service provider.

You should ensure you are well versed in your specific pump model. Read your product manual and follow any required service or maintenance steps.

Jet pump maintenance is a relatively simple yet crucial part of caring for your boat. By keeping up with regular inspections, cleaning, and lubrication, you can avoid costly repairs and extend the lifespan of your jet pump.
